While the goofy folk-horror of cult film The Wicker Man isn’t quite the visual many of us had in mind while listening to Genevieve Stokes’ recent Catching Rabbits EP, the new music video for the glistening track “Can I” transports us to a similar island community of mysteriously masked figures. Filmed in Maine at Reid State Park, Harpswell Heritage Land Trust’s Potts Point, and Skolfield Shores Preserve in Portland, the video sees Stokes paddling up to an island that eerily resembles the one from the 1973 film. “‘Can I’ was filmed in Harpswell, Maine in September—my favorite time to be home,” she shares, noting that Donnie Darko was also a visual inspiration.

In spite of those cinematic reference points, there’s nothing sinister about the Abbie Pitre–directed clip, which matches the sunny disposition of the track while highlighting some locales integral to the songwriter’s early years. “I’m still waiting for my mom to come and pick me up / I’m still chasing all my childhood dreams,” Stokes sings on “Can I,” highlighting the sense of home embedded in the song.
