Rob Lowe and Michael Muller recently announced their latest collection of songs via their chamber-pop-by-way-of-post-rock-and-ambient outfit Balmorhea, with Pendant World set to follow-up the duo’s 2021 LP The Wind. And while the new record’s latest single “New Conditions” explores new territory for the band, the seed of the idea for the track has been embedded in Lowe’s mind—and his phone’s voice memos—as far back as 2019 when that last album was coming together.

With the help of saxophonist Joseph Shabason and percussionist Jason Treuting, Lowe and Muller finally nailed the composition down during the new record’s recording session, with “New Conditions” achieving the very same sense of ethereality that seemed to haunt Lowe for years. “I always felt when I was working on this song like I was trying to hold a cloud in my hands or something,” he shares of the lilting tune. “It was almost this feeling of this song existing out there in the sky and I just had to keep trying to find the outlines of it.”

Lowe adds that after three years of chasing the melody, recording with Shabason and Treuting took only three days. Check out the results below.
