Logan Lynn’s music has seen countless chapters since the songwriter/filmmaker/mental health advocate began releasing songs over 20 years ago, and this latest period appears to be his most collaborative. After connecting with local Portland scene staples Portugal. The Man in 2018 for a joint tour/mental health awareness campaign, Lynn linked up with the production duo Yellow Trash Can (and, by extension, renowned tambourinist Tony Hawk) with whom he’s releasing an EP titled Distracted on July 21 through Kill Rock Stars. “I wrote this EP to capture a moment in my life that I wanted to make last forever,” Lynn shares of the short set of songs. “Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever—including that moment in my life—but I figure these songs might.”
The latest single to be revealed from Distracted is the EP’s title track, which marks the first collaboration Lynn recorded with YTC, and which helped pave the way for the remaining recordings. It’s a lightly funky track lined with synths recalling minimalist mid-’00s rap and an upbeat melody bringing to mind the vibrant indie-pop sounds of the following decade. The lyrics, however, contain a somber undercurrent relating to the inevitable fleeting nature of that aforementioned moment.
“This third single is about attraction and that feeling of knowing that someone is getting close enough to maybe hurt you, but deciding to lean in and take a chance at love anyway,” Lynn shares. “In the end, as the song goes, ‘I’ve seen it all fall right down many times before’—and this most recent experience of loss I’ve been having has been no exception. It seems to me that there can be no closeness without loss, so maybe all any of us can ever do is just try to stay brave, be present, and keep sweet while we navigate the inevitable.”
Paired with the new single is the latest short film from the series, which visually puts a psychedelic spin on the song’s themes. “This latest scene from the Distracted film explores the outer-worldly experience of finding someone you adore, and how discombobulating that can be,” Lynn elucidates.
