Since introducing themselves in 2020 with their debut LP Saddest Girl at the Party, LA’s Suzie True have continued to hone their grungy sound to lean into both emotional poles referenced in that album title, as we’ve heard on the first two singles from their Get Better Records follow-up Sentimental Scum slated for release on June 30. According to the band—and as evinced in these new tracks—the record explores mental health, addiction, and sobriety, in addition to “exploring queer identity, growing up, heartbreak, and LOOOoOoOoOvee [stylization theirs]” while aided by mixing from Nervus’ Em Foster and mastering from Koji Shiraki (or, to friends and Run for Cover heads, just Koji).
Today the band is sharing the title track and third single from Sentimental Scum, which pairs window-shattering grunge riffs with lyrics about adjusting to the realization that you’re aging beyond your comfort level (“I used to be young and dumb / Now I’m just dumb,” vocalist Lexi McCoy-Caso relatably sings). “This song is about getting older and feeling sentimental about your past, because you feel like you don’t have much of a future,” the band shares. “You’re caught up in what was and what could have been. You feel old and weird about it. The resolution is to just say ‘fuck it’ and have fun with the people you love because that’s all you can really do.”
The single arrives with a video wherein the trio does just that—check it out below, and pre-order Sentimental Scum here.
