Wednesday was officially the first day of summer, but you couldn't tell in New York, with cold temperatures and grey clouds hovering over the city. It was a fitting night for the trailblazers of darkwave, however, as the recorded sounds of rain and lightning echoed through Madison Square Garden in lieu of pre-show music before The Cure entered the stage for the second of three sold-out shows.
Yet Robert Smith was all smiles throughout their three-hour show, pacing the perimeter of the stage and making eye contact with seemingly everyone in the arena, often flanked by bandmates Reeves Gabrels and Simon Gallup like a set of bodyguards with guitars. Their 29-song set list was stacked with hits ("Lovesong," "Just Like Heaven," "Friday I'm in Love"), deep cuts ("From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea," "Like Cockatoos," "Doing the Unstuck"), and several unreleased new tracks ("Alone," "Endsong," "A Fragile Thing").
FLOOD photographer David Iskra was there to take it all in, including the opening set by their Scottish tourmates The Twilight Sad. Check out our recap below.
