Summer may have only just begun, but it feels like we’re all already looking forward to putting our ill-fitting sweaters back on and attempting to stylize our hair like Robert Smith, as new festivals devoted entirely to darkwave continue cropping up, groups like Molchat Doma continue to gather steam, and Drab Majesty announce their return—to say nothing of the ongoing Cure tour. In other words it’s the perfect time for Jancy Rae to announce her sophomore record as MØAA, Jaywalker, which takes a slightly poppier approach to this icily industrial sound.
With the release slated to drop October 13, Rae is giving us a first taste of the project today with the title track and its nocturnal video. The zoned-out guitars, prominent bassline, and uncanny-valley static drum beat place the single firmly within the darkwave canon, while Rae’s tired, breathy vocals feel more in line with dream pop conventions than the theatrical singing generally tied to the new wave offshoot. Meanwhile, the Blau!-directed visual is equally wandering, as we see MØAA broodily meandering the city at night. Check it out below.
