Around this time last summer, East Coast emcee LUCI burst onto the scene with her brooding yet engaging single “Ash & Dust,” with a full EP’s worth of emotionally ambiguous experimental rap songs to follow (Massive Attack, System of a Down, and Kanye’s “Black Skinhead” were all featured on a playlist she made for us compiling artists she relates to). While there’s still no word of a debut album, the New York–based songwriter is back with a one-off single that takes on a much sunnier disposition: “11:11” takes the form of an upbeat—if just a bit off-the-beaten-path—dance track paired with carefree lyrics.
“This is exactly where I am in life at the moment,” LUCI shares of the track—and perhaps her next chapter as a musician. “A fresh love. Springtime. Joy. Dancing. Glee. 11:11. Turning a new leaf. I’m happy. I’m in love and I wanna dance. I chose to be present in that goodness.”
