It was just over a year ago that Blue Broderick released her last full-length as Diners, though her follow-up to last-summer’s Four Wheels and the Truth is already shaping up to be pretty far removed from that record’s bubblegum-pop melodies. Written and recorded following a move from Phoenix to LA, Domino’s early singles lean into the Southern Californian legacy of surf-rock music while bolstered by the power-pop sensibilities brought to the table by the album’s producer Mo Troper. “This is the rock record that I always wanted to make,” Broderick shared in a press release leading up to Domino’s release. “I know that any time I turn it on, it’s what I set out to do.”
Before the full record arrives later this month, we’re getting another pre-album single in the form of the explicitly beach-ready “Someday I’ll Go Surfing,” which sets Broderick’s gentle vocals against the ebb and flow of jangling guitars and tight drumming. Lyrically, the track takes on a broader meaning than what the title may imply, using water sports as synecdoche for bigger changes on the horizon. “‘Someday I’ll Go Surfing’ isn’t exclusively about surfing,” Broderick confirms, “but rather confronting the unknown and moving on to the next big thing.”
