It’s hard to believe, but this weekend will see the 10th anniversary of No Regerts, the debut album from Seattle’s jangle-punks Chastity Belt. Rather than letting that milestone slip by, Suicide Squeeze Records is releasing a limited edition vinyl reissue of the record this Friday, while additionally revealing plans for a 7-inch dropping October 27 which sees friend and former tourmate Courtney Barnett covering the band’s 2017 track “Different Now” (from their most Courtney-titled album I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone) along with an additional cover by Kurt Vile, who takes on “This Time of Night” from the same album.
“I remember when the album came out and I listened to ‘Different Now’ over and over, I thought they were singing directly to me,” Barnett shared in a press release, before explaining how Vile came to know the band. “It’s a perfect piece of songwriting, I showed it to Kurt and he would always sing it to me on tour. I love Chastity Belt. I’m pretty sure we met in 2014 at a record store in Seattle, then we toured together in 2015 and we’ve been friends ever since.”
Barnett additionally shared that the cover originally took the form of an acoustic version before consulting with Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa (who’s played percussion on and produced several of Barnett’s records) on programmed drumming which reshaped the project as something dreamier, janglier, and a bit more familiar to the original.
