With the release of her new single “50/50” today, over 50 percent of Miso Extra’s forthcoming EP MSG is now available to stream before the full package arrives this Friday—yet “50/50” also serves as a reminder that those remaining two unreleased tracks could sound like just about anything. While previous single “Space Junk” viscerally evoked turn-of-the-millennium American radio pop, the new track takes on a more complex palette of influence, from internet-age wonky electronica to avant-garde hip-hop—all of which is to serve Miso Extra’s wholly unique production heard across the EP.

Meanwhile, the track’s bilingual lyrics serve as a personal reminder to the musician to lay off the gas once in a while and appreciate her surroundings. “Finding the balance in life is hard and I’m someone who is guilty of being stuck in drive,” she notes. “I wrote this song to remind me to not be too hard on myself and to try and enjoy the ride.”

“50/50” arrives with a vibrant anime-by-way-of-vaporwave video created by Japanese illustrator Taku Mikami. “I fell in love with [Mikami’s] moody color palettes and animation style,” Miso shares. “I took a chance and reached out to ask if he would be interested in working on a video. When they said yes and came back with a treatment it felt like a no-brainer. Taku has beautifully managed to weave in so many different references to the lyrics into the visuals. I honestly think this video is amazing!”
