Formed by Exasperation drummer Dave Mead, San Diego’s Crasher was initially something of a secret. But as his confidence as a frontman grew, Mead loosened the grip on keeping the project under wraps. There was first a two-song demo, then an EP, and now there’s the band’s debut album. Titled Speaking Terms, and releasing in October, it fuses post-punk with garage rock as noise and melody continually battle it out for dominance across the record’s 10 songs.
On the latest single “Iced Tea” it’s the latter that wins out, with Mead’s diffident, near-spoken vocals floating in the summer breeze of the song’s melody. It’s care-free but forlorn—a future full of regret—and serves as something of a reprieve from the rest of the album. It’s a deep, relaxing intake of breath designed to make you forget about the travails of real life and the state of the world.
“Iced tea can be an emotional beverage—an escape from heat, an escape from the present or the past, temporary as that escape may be,” says Mead about the song. “Like an alternative to the perfect cup of coffee from Twin Peaks that you should gift yourself each day. There was a time where I just needed an escape that was one glass of iced tea long, a moment of disassociation before facing reality. This song is definitely one of the most peaceful on the album, and I wanted it to serve as a balm for some of the more harsh-noisy moments. It cools things off for a bit.”
