It’s been nearly a decade since the chamber-pop collective Fanfarlo last released an album, and in that time co-vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Cathy Lucas has plumbed the depths of countless left-field genres with her new collective, Vanishing Twin. So far, their latest collection Afternoon X already hints at the mod neo-psych of Stereolab (the title track) and a less definable art-pop sound (“Marbles”)—yet with the record’s third single, the trio further deconstruct into the type of near-ambient library music the resurgence of Mort Garson’s discography has recently brought to the surface.

The skittering (and aptly plant-based) “Lazy Garden” pairs an ominous, progressive instrumental with Lucas’ chanson vocals. “It’s a vision of a retirement that will never happen, accompanied by village orchestra,” Lucas cryptically shares of the single, drawing attention to its equally opaque lyrics: “I’m half baked, a soft cake, and half blind, from the sun / And my brains, and its waves, full of holes like a sponge.”
