Near the beginning of the summer, Jordan Lee announced his return under the chamber-pop moniker Mutual Benefit after a five-year break, with Growing at the Edges set to arrive October 6 via Transgressive Records. Since then we’ve heard a handful of the new tracks leading up to the record’s release—including the lilting composition “Wasteland Companions,” which recalls Spiritualized if Jason Pierce never cleared the Earth’s atmosphere.

During a recent trip to LA, the NYC-based musician managed to assemble a team of local companions to perform the lightly orchestral tune in the city’s Highland Park area for a “Neighborhoods” session. In spite of the track’s instrumental intricacies, the five-piece band backing Lee on acoustic guitar comes surprisingly close to recreating the original recording in front of an increasingly dusky backdrop of greenery.
