Time has been kind to Voxtrot, the mid-aughts indie group that never quite saw the attention they deserved while they were an active band struggling to keep up with many of their peers who would strike gold in the coming years as the legitimacy of the “alt” categorization was slowly erased from the term “alt-rock.” Since then the band’s been swept up in a similar phenomenon that’s brought acclaim to fellow cult rockers Candy Claws and Panchiko, who achieved so much success after calling it quits that they had no choice but to revisit the project—whether through recording new material or re-releasing their old music.
And, as it turns out, Voxtrot fall into both categories. After reviving the band around this time last year and selling out shows for a reunion tour supporting a pair of archival vinyl comps, the band is back in full swing with all five original members bringing a new single into the world. “Another Fire” marks their first new recorded track in 14 years, picking up right where they left off in 2009—albeit with a decade’s worth of critical experience and personal growth under their belt.
“I started writing ‘Another Fire’ in 2021 when the world was still in and out of lockdown,” vocalist Ramesh Srivastava shares. “It was inspired by various subjects I was reading about at the time—reincarnation, post-WWII Britain—as well as my personal life, the overarching theme being rebirth. The recording of the song was a rebirth in itself, as it was the first song in 15 years that all five original band members arranged together! ’Twas both gratifying and inspiring to witness the collaborative process transform it from its demo state into its final form.”
The song arrives with a music video that sees the band performing the track in a living room setting. “The goal for the video was simply to reintroduce Voxtrot to the world and provide an artful peek into our natural habitat—currently Lockhart, Texas—which I think [directors Daniel Everett Patrick and Angie Bandari] did beautifully,” Srivastava adds.
