Back in 2018, New Jersey jangle-pop royalty and co-stars of Jonathan Demme’s third best movie The Feelies extended their knack for cover songs to a marathon set at Jersey City’s White Eagle Hall as an extension of NYC’s Velvet Underground Experience, which was running at the time. No, they didn’t just cover “I’m Waiting for the Man” or “Heroin”—they covered approximately 71 minutes of VU material (including one of those tracks) with a reverently psychedelic twang and an anachronistic proto-punk flair.
As legend of the set grows, we’re fortunate enough to hear it secondhand with a new full-length recording of the performance arriving tomorrow via Bar/None Records. Some Kinda Love: Performing the Music of The Velvet Underground captures the live feel of the iconic band’s near-decade of output by, well, having it recorded live. And before the full record arrives, we’re getting one last glimpse at the project via a first listen of one of the band’s most ramshackle tunes, “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” brought to life here with all the lurching, atmospheric haziness it requires.
“A great observational song that captures a part of the Warhol Factory days,” Feelies’ Bill Million shares. “It’s a very simple arrangement, but one with an innovative use of the instrumentation, from ostrich guitar tuning, to prepared piano, to the bass drum. Considering that it was recorded in early 1966 and being aware of the musical environment of the time, only makes it that much more amazing.”
