After a decade of Dunedin-Sounding rock music released via indie-du-jour label Dead Oceans and local legends Flying Nun, Kane Strang recently announced the debut album of his new post-punk-y outfit Office Dog, with Spiel set to arrive January 26 via New West Records. Having already introduced the record with lead single “Big Air,” “Gleam” sees that brooding rock sound burrowing deeper into grunge guitar and disaffected vocals. Though according to Strang, this track marks the record’s moment of hope—hence the title.
“Throughout Spiel’s lyrics, there are a lot of metaphors that have to do with light and dark spaces, probably because it’s essentially a record about change and time,” he explains. “I love ‘Gleam’ because it’s one of the more hopeful tracks, with the ‘gleam in the grime’ for me representing something/someone that is a positive force and worth chasing down or holding onto.”
The track comes paired with a nocturnal black-and-white visual so dark it’s tough to make out the narrative, with shots of the band performing the track intercut with a lone figure in a glistening white jumpsuit making his way through the dark. Check it out below, and pre-order Spiel here.
