’Tis the season for gimp-masked creeps with foggy motives to run around rural spaces slashing throats. With X reviving interest in the ’70s post–Texas Chainsaw grindhouse movement last year, Charlotte-based punks Dollar Signs are getting in on the fun today with their video for new single “Old Times’ Sake,” arriving the day before their latest album Legend Tripping drops. Despite the bloody chaos the clip embraces from the opening moments, vocalist Erik Button notes that the sentiment of the song itself is quite positive.
“The album has a few songs involving characters, and this one is a happier story,” Button explains of the anthemic pop-punk track embellished by a horn section. “This song is about your rebellious friend who stayed put in the place they were born and wasn’t poisoned by smalltown ideals. It’s technically a sequel to a song we wrote off our first record called ‘Brutal Dan.’ I wanted to have a song that showed that even if you don't escape a place you can still grow and flourish.”
Meanwhile, the video sees a group of individuals having less luck in their small town, as one by one they get picked off by an anonymous killer. “We were also unbelievably excited to work with an incredibly talented team to make a music video that we’re really proud of,” Button continues. “Eric Bader and Stephen Venezia have made music videos for some of our favorite artists like AJJ and Fall Out Boy, so when they pitched us we really jumped on the opportunity. We love horror films, so when they asked if we’d be interested in doing a video based around grindhouse slashers of the 1970s we couldn’t say no. The video nails the feeling of those old movie trailers and the sunny horror of it nails the feeling the record gives me.”
