Last month, Laura Jane Grace returned with “Dysphoria Hoodie,” a loose single carrying on the folk-punk tradition explored on her 2020 debut solo album Stay Alive and its follow-up EP At War with the Silverfish a year later, and which she’d established further back during her time fronting Against Me! and The Devouring Mothers. Today she’s sharing another new single, “Hole in My Head,” which swaps the acoustic guitar for an electric one as the upbeat anthem instead takes on the rapid-fire chords and bubblegum charm of power-pop.
The single also serves as the title track for Grace’s newly announced solo LP, which arrives February 16 via Polyvinyl. Landing with the single is a music video directed by Gilbert Trejo telling a two-minute punk-rock coming-of-age story as a weary office drone evolves into a full-fledged punk, with the video’s climax providing a bit of context for the new album’s dramatic cover art.
