Manchester electro-pop quartet Porij have had the honor of opening for Coldplay, Metronomy, and Friendly Fires before even releasing an album—yet before continuing to build on this impressive reputation, the outfit will share their debut collection of songs titled Teething in April. Released on the heels of a trip to Austin for SXSW the month prior, Teething is being teased today with the record’s second single (following “You Should Know Me,” which was shared late last year). “My Only Love” is a skittering, lovelorn ballad commemorating the present moment rather than worrying about the future. Over a clubby beat and smooth R&B guitar, vocalist Scout Moore (a.k.a. Egg) explores this idea within the realm of relationships.
“I went to see Dancing at Lughnasa at the National Theatre and was completely struck by a moment in the closing monologue which has the line ‘Dancing with eyes half-closed because to open them would break the spell,’” Moore shares. “This felt so fitting to how I was immediately dealing with the conflict I was experiencing. The power of succumbing to denial felt particularly inviting. Over time the lyrics settled and this song anchors on the thoughts in the bridge, saying ‘I don’t know if this will be my forever love but it’s my only love for now.’ It’s easy to put pressure on a long-term relationship, but through this song I remembered to enjoy each moment and not take things too seriously.”
