Mean Jeans might just be the masters of mixing the ridiculous with the sublime. That’s kind of been their thing since forming in Portland, Oregon in 2006. Though now spread out around the US, the trio of Billy Jeans, Jeans Wilder, and Junior Jeans (you can guess whether those are their real names or not) have never hidden their love of the Ramones, pop-punk, or youthful, reckless abandon.
“Lost My Mind,” the latest single from the trio’s forthcoming sixth album, Blasted, has all of those in spades. A sufficiently short dose of hedonism (and its subsequent consequences), it’s a feel-good song about feeling good, even when you know you won’t feel so good the morning after. Which kind of makes it the ultimate hangover song—but perhaps one to listen to when you’ve finally shaken it off. At just 78 seconds, it’s the second shortest track on the record, but it only takes that long for it to burrow deep into your skin and soul until you’re writhing in paroxysms of delight, joy, regret, and, of course, toxic substances.
Some of those substances make an appearance in the track’s music video, which sees bassist Junior Jeans living up to his full potential. “I had a dream that our bass player was a courtroom TV judge, which I believe is his true calling,” Billy Jeans shares, introducing the punk-courtroom visual featuring, among other things, a defendant being sworn in on a VHS copy of River’s Edge. “We put him in a judge’s robe, set it to our new song ‘Lost My Mind,’ and the rest is history. This video also serves as a pilot episode for a Judge Jeans series we’d like to produce this year if anyone wants to invest.”
Blasted is out February 9 via Fat Wreck, but for now you can check out the video below. If you’re in Australia you can also catch the band on tour with The Chats next month at the dates listed here.
