Last week, Boston-based songwriter Layzi revealed that she’d signed with all-things-alt-rock label Born Losers, with a new EP planned for later in the year. But before then she’s making her official label debut with the one-off single “close 2 u,” a melancholy post-break-up statement of acceptance aiming to counteract the onslaught of playfully romantic—if not downright horny—new recordings we’re certain to be bombarded with this week as we approach the most polarizing of holidays.

“close 2 u” hits the sweet spot of lullaby dream-pop guitar and consistent soft-rock backing instrumentation that peers like Snail Mail and Soccer Mommy have mastered over the years. Meanwhile, the lyrics feel just as raw as those of Lindsey Jordan or Sophie Allison as Layzi contemplates a failed relationship from a fresh perspective. “I wrote ‘close 2 u’ a few months after going through a really tough breakup,” she recalls. “The lyrics are about the sad acknowledgments you make to yourself post-breakup, accepting that the relationship is really over, and learning how to be content with your own loneliness while going through the healing process: ‘It tears me apart, but I put myself back together.’”

The new single arrives with a video of Layzi performing the track (mostly) with a backing band—check that out below.
