Jordan Rakei has undergone some major changes since releasing his 2021 album What We Call Life, but far more significant than signing to his new label Verve Forecast is one particular update in his personal life: he became a father. The neo-soul songwriter’s upcoming fifth album The Loop, then, sees a shift in perspective that reflects this new sense of responsibility while additionally leaning into the music that made him fall in love with the form in the first place—as if listening with new ears to prepare his child to follow that trajectory soon as well.

Meanwhile, the record’s latest single, “Learning,” sees Rakei reflecting on his own educational development. Touched up with orchestral flourishes and a backing chorus of vocals, the track sees Rakei’s vision fully realized as he meditates on how continued learning is an important component in continued teaching. “Bringing my son into the world, I’m conscious that there’s a lot I need to teach him, but also, how much I still have to learn, and how we’re constantly in this state of learning,” he explains. “The track is a masterclass in unhurried, erudite composing and emphasizes the importance of setting an example for future generations.”
