Bleary Eyed are gearing up to celebrate the one-year anniversary of their self-titled EP this weekend, with the four-song collection of computer-warped shoegaze arriving March 10 of last year via Born Losers Records. Channeling the same blend of nostalgic ’90s alt-rock and future-looking sampling as fellow Philadelphian outfit Spirit of the Beehive, the songs on Bleary Eyed manage to eschew any pretension that might conceivably result from that type of experimentation. “I could write shit that’s really esoteric,” frontman Nathaniel Salfi noted. “But I want to write stuff that’s fun and warm for people to enjoy, too.”
With no new release to speak of quite yet, the quartet is returning with a loose single today called “2 True.” The wailing track opens with the type of operatic synthwave M83 defined with Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming before weaving in and out of familiar corners of the band’s prior discography, the developing bedroom-gaze discography established by labelmates like Rew and Cathedral Bells, and the classic shoegaze canon. “‘2 True’ is just about life speeding up, going through relationship changes and family issues,” Salfi shares, “getting to core beliefs, feeling existential dread. The song still ends on a positive note: ‘Take your time, there’s nothing stopping.’”
