The Zürich-based ambient-Americana duo Hermanos Gutiérrez has been on a roll since establishing their unique sound in 2017 with their debut LP. After three additional full-lengths building upon the spaced-out Mexican folk of 8 años they caught the attention of The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who signed them to his Easy Eye Sound label and worked on their 2022 record El bueno y el malo. Now the duo is already back with their follow-up album, Sonido Cósmico, which was produced by Auerbach and will arrive June 14.
The latest cut from the new record sees the brothers do what they do best: let intuition guide the movement of their fingers as “Low Sun” takes the form of a relaxed jam session between electric guitar and lap steel before post-production tunes the recording up with complex layers of sound. “We intentionally kept the idea as basic as possible, just enhancing the two main parts of guitar and lap steel, therefore trusting in capturing the spirit of the song later while being in the studio with Dan [Auerbach],” the duo shares. “We didn’t want to set any limits to the song or have too much of a vision of how this song should be.”
The track arrives with a video directed by Robert Schober which sees the hermanos noodling on their respective instruments while eerie, Venkman-esque studies are carried out on individuals evidently in possession of supernatural powers. It’s kind of like a very, very low-key X-Men: First Class. You can check that out below, and pre-order Sonido Cósmico here. Additionally, the single will be available as a double-sided 7-inch along with a remix by El Michels Affair and featuring Jensine Benitez—pre-order that release here.
