In another classic case of inspiration hitting at the least expected moment, Bloomington-based songwriter Amy Oelsner—Amy O for short—has children’s literature to thank for getting her creative gears moving again after the release of 2019’s Shell. “I was inspired by the simple rhymes of the children’s books I’d been reading to my kid,” she shares of her newly announced LP Mirror, Reflect’s lead single, “Dribble Dribble,” which features Diane Coffee collaborator Glenn Myers on co-vocals. “I had been feeling stuck and like the world was collapsing around me. I wrote it with the hope that the world (and I) could go through this period of destruction and loss, and come back stronger.”

As the single suggests, the record strikes a fascinating balance between adult concerns in a post-COVID world and a playful, carefree sonic palette steeped in Amy O’s familiar lo-fi scuzz, with Oelsner and Myers blending the two perspectives as they trade lines on “Dribble Dribble.” “Dribble dribble, drop drop / Can’t make the rain stop / Wanna form lighting from my heart to my mouth,” the two duet on the closing chorus as a grunge guitar line and ambiguously mechanical drumbeat fill out the track.
