In a newsletter e-mailed to fans today, the producers of the wildly popular podcast Serial announced the series’ return with not one, but two upcoming seasons. Back at the beginning of the year, host and producer Sarah Koenig asked the public to submit possible story ideas for the next season of Serial (season one’s case was brought to Koenig by a friend of the eventual subject, Adnan Syed). The first season, you may recall, followed the true-crime story of Syed, a Baltimore teenager who was convicted in 2000 of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee and sentenced to life in prison, and the many questions arising from the case and Syed’s trial. (As of this posting, and no doubt due to the popularity of the podcast, Sayed has been granted an appeal, which will include previously unheard testimony from a key witness.)
There are no firm details on the next two seasons or their subjects, only that season two will debut in the fall, with three scheduled the following spring, in 2016. “Sorry—we can’t tell you details about the new stories yet,” the release states. “What we can say is that they’re very different from Season One, but no less interesting to us.”
Queue up the theme now, and put on your sleuthing headphones in preparation for fall:
