Australian songwriter Jess Ribeiro has slowly been trickling out songs from her forthcoming Summer of Love LP, which have landed anywhere between the nearly droning art-pop whimsy of “Everything Is Now” and the title track’s minimal piano orchestration. The fourth and final single to land ahead of the album’s release this Friday—the sadly contemplative “Maybe If I Wear Sunglasses Inside I Won’t Feel Tired”—manages to lean into facets of both of those previously released tracks as Ribeiro’s deadpan recitation of poetic mundanities brings compatriot Courtney Barnett to mind while the somber piano balladry invokes Kiwi songwriter Sarah Mary Chadwick.

“‘Maybe If I Wear Sunglasses Inside I Won’t Feel Tired’ was going to be the title of the album because the song hit the essence of the Melbourne lockdown period for me in a sad, comedy kind of way,” she shares. “Photographer Andreia Lemos did a great job of capturing this mood when she photographed me in my pajamas and jacket wearing sunglasses inside at her apartment last year in Hackney. I almost felt like The Dude from The Big Lebowski.”

She adds, “In the end I opted for the title Summer of Love, as I feel like that’s what the world needs, regardless of the season—we need good vibes with each other.”
