If the lyrical content of Jahnah Camille’s new single “flesh” feels a little raw to you, you could probably chalk that up to the fact that the Birmingham, Alabama–based songwriter is barely out of high school and therefore still in possession of a mainline to all the angst and early heartbreak teenhood inevitably brings. In fact the five songs that make up Camille’s forthcoming debut EP i tried to freeze light, but only remember a girl were written and recorded while she was still in high school, making trips out to Atlanta to put her rough ideas to tape.
As a taste of what’s to come, though, “flesh” falls under the category of bedroom-pop that’s as lyrically intimate as the genre title suggests, landing somewhere between Soccer Mommy’s lethargic vocals and the whimsy of Indigo De Souza. Meanwhile, the lyrics feel like a sci-fi take on romance, with Camille relishing in the past rather than fully moving on: “I’d rather count the kisses than throw you away,” she sings. “‘flesh’ is heavily inspired by the movie About Time and what it means to me,” Camille notes. “The movie is about a young guy who finds out [about] the men in his family’s ability to time travel. He ultimately uses this ability to be mindful and live each day intentionally. The song is about my own relationship with intention.”
