After coming into her own as a figure among the West Coast contemporary-folk scene over the course of a slew of solo albums far removed from her work with the LA garage-punk outfit FEELS, Shannon Lay is returning today with a one-off single titled “Mirrors” which, like most of her discography, invites the listener to look inward throughout its flitting four-minute run time. Following a foray into covers collections initiated by last year’s Covers Vol. 1, the new tune is a welcome return to the lilting melodies of 2021’s Geist, as well as a lovely testament to personal growth for the songwriter.
“I've spent a lot of my life resisting what comes naturally in favor of what is expected, and I’m at a point where I feel very called to shed that old conditioning,” Lay shares. “Choosing curiosity over being judgmental has helped me love aspects of myself for what they are instead of hating them for what they’re not, and by releasing the weight of the experience in favor of the lightness of wisdom we can move beyond the story and root into authenticity and truth. There is so much beauty in letting go and remembering that wonder only exists because we are here to experience it and that in itself is perfection. I want this song to be a warm reminder to keep learning what it feels like to let your light shine bright and be seen, so we can live in our fullest expression as the magnificent, messy miracles that we are.”
