I don’t know why, but Madlib releasing a song and it being announced via a press release seems antithetical to his methods. I would’ve preferred being summoned to a mountain to receive this news (or at least his mystical studio in Highland Park). But it is what it is. We can’t complain about new music from the MadGod, can we?
His latest track features two lyrical dynamos of very different ilks: Black Thought from The Roots and underground rabble-rouser Your Old Droog. The cut—shockingly—features dusty drums and heady bars from these perennially brainy emcees. “This is strictly for the honorees,” noted Black Thought in the aforementioned press release. “Madlib is in his bag per usual and YOD is more than a force to be reckoned with. Simply complex, this piece is high art. Triple threat. Instant classique.”
“It’s an honor to be inducted into the heavyweight class of hip-hop,” Droog added. “To be able to spar with one of the greatest emcees on a beat by the greatest producer is a dream come true. Look out for the Madlib x YOD album coming soon.”
In the meantime, check out the new track below.
