Bôa are among the most recent beneficiaries of the career-revivalism app that is TikTok, with their post-Britpop hit “Duvet” receiving the attention it deserves among audiences born after its initial 1998 release. While there’s still no formal word on a follow-up to their 2005 sophomore release Get There, the band has a mostly sold-out North American tour planned for this fall, which they’ve just announced will also include a leg in the UK and Ireland.
Additionally, today marks the release of a new single, which follows March’s “Walk with Me” as the outfit’s first new material in nearly two decades. True to its name, “Beautiful & Broken” leans into the band’s affinity for orchestral flourishes while the lyrics see vocalist Jasmine Rodgers wrestling with life-long oppression. “Some of the lyric-writing has come from a place of me being mixed-race and a female in a world where I didn’t feel particularly comfortable,” she explains. “I’m still always reviewing and assessing that. It’s about a really dark time in my brain, talking to the darkness just before you go to sleep when you can’t sleep and are trying to find comfort.”
The music video for the track prepares fans for the band’s upcoming tour, albeit placing the band in a much smaller performance space than those they’ll be inhabiting in September. “We wanted to present the song in an intimate way, in a space that reflects the contemplative nature of the lyrics and music,” Rodgers explains of the cathedral-set visual.
