Before committed New Romantics Choir Boy released their debut album in 2016, the group’s bassist Chaz Costello had already established the similarly new-wavey Sculpture Club. Yet in place of the former group’s melancholic take on synthpop, the latter project always emphasized the upbeat elements of the post-punk and gothic-rock scenes, their first two albums acting as the New Order to Choir Boy’s simultaneous Joy Division.

With their self-titled third record on the horizon, Sculpture Club return today with a new single called “Never Have I Ever” that serves as a bit of a mission statement for the group: “There’s a joy to be found in accepting how pointless things are,” Costello shares, introducing a track that pairs breathy vocals with guitars that recall The Cure at their most radio-friendly. “[The thought that] ‘nothing matters’ leads you down a road. Despair is the first stop for many of us, but if you keep going you end up at absurdity. You can look back and realize how silly and absolutely ridiculous things are. I ebb and flow between the two, like most of us. But this song is my representation of the latter and the power I’ve found in it.”

The track’s video bounces between live footage of the band and a glimpse at extreme fandom, while also alluding to the outfit’s recent relocation from SLC to Dallas. Check it out below, and pre-order Sculpture Club before it drops June 14 via Born Losers Records here.
