Last month, Cadence Weapon released his sixth album, Rollercoaster, which paired lyrics about our current state of tech apocalypse with experimental beats mostly landing somewhere between trap and future garage. As we noted in our review of the LP, the Canadian emcee born Rollie Pemberton displays his brilliant wit and sardonic intellect as he wonders what the club would be like if instead of ecstasy and catharsis, nights were propelled by dynamic lectures on technology, conversations on societal structures, and forums on fair labor practices.
Pemberton recently performed one of the album’s tracks, “Exceptional,” in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario for “Neighborhoods,” setting up his laptop in front of the scenic Sherman Falls along Ancaster Creek. Giving an animated solo performance backed by the rushing water and natural surroundings clashing with the song’s electro-industrial instrumental, the set is nothing short of, well, exceptional.
