Grand Rapids’ Major Murphy caught our ear in 2021 with their sophomore record Access, a wholesome collection of soft-rock balladry flirting with chic subgenres like dream pop and power pop but ultimately opting for something uniquely Midwestern (has anyone coined the term ope-rock yet?). Today the trio is announcing that record’s follow-up, with Fallout set to arrive mid-month on their longtime label home of Winspear. The eight-song collection focuses on the lyrical dichotomies of destruction and renewal, while the instrumentation approaches a similar contrast of classic-rock riffs and Sleepytime-tea vocal coos.

The first single from the collection, “Time Out,” perfectly encapsulates all of this, cruising through its two and a half minutes without throwing off either balance. “This one is speaking to the cyclical nature of life and the way that is reflected in the movement of water on the planet,” lead songwriter Jacob Bullard share. “I think it’s a little bit of a lament that shifts to a kind of affirmation in the chorus; lamenting the grind of life but that within that heavy turnover there is also incredible beauty to be found.”
