One constant among Pictureplane’s 15 years of output, as the project’s evolved from electroclash to witch house (well, he might deny that) to futuristic darkwave, has been Travis Egedy’s breathy, near-falsetto vocals, which anchor releases otherwise spilling across cloud-rap, atmospheric drum-and-bass, and dungeon synth such as his most recent album Dopamine. Which really adds to the sense that he’s entering a new chapter with his new single “Velvet Lies,” a recording that doubles down on the darkwave influence with prominent bass and electronic percussion, wailing sax, and a vocoder bringing Egedy’s voice down to a much deeper register.

The track lands as Pictureplane preps to hit the road for a series of eight live shows spanning the East Coast, and presumably ahead of more tracks leaning into this new direction. “‘Velvet Lies’ is part of a new collection of music I’ve been making where I’m entering into some new sonic realms and really just enjoying myself and being free,” he shares. “I hope to see you on my upcoming tour!”
