Simi Valley rockers Cheridomingo are gearing up to release their first full-length collection of songs, and true to its name, Shapeshifter seems to have some surprises up its sleeve. After releasing a pair of singles that reflect the band’s previous proclivities for aughts emo and post-hardcore nostalgia, their latest single, “/cry,” embraces an unexpected combination of ’90s radio R&B and industrial rock, as well as more contemporary psychedelic hip-hop. The latter of which is also reflected in the music video, wherein vocalist Anthony Avina appears to be stranded in a Southern Californian desert.
“We wrote the verse for ‘/cry’ years ago, always hoping it’d eventually turn into an actual song, and once we were in the studio this last time around we were psyched that our producer wanted to work on it,” the band shares, referring to Trash Talk/Zulu producer Zach Tuch. “Putting it together was a long time coming, and getting to drive out to the Trona Pinnacles for the first time for the music video was an awesome and beautiful experience, despite the 110 degree weather. Grateful for our videographer Madie [Ramser] who always crushes it, and grateful to the band and Zach for building such a weird/different song than what we normally do.”
