Three years after releasing their first EP of lo-fi indie-pop, Montreal four-piece knitting have scheduled their debut full-length, Some Kind of Heaven, for a fall release via Mint Records. Graduating to a simmering brand of grunge-pop recalling the mid-’10s era of bands like Ovlov and Pope, early singles “Sleeper” and “Spirit Gum” suggest the band’s first proper album (which was produced by Preoccupations’ Scott Munro) will pay homage to From a Basement on a Hill era Elliott Smith with occasional forays into scuzzy dream pop.

This latter influence comes into focus on the latest cut to materialize ahead of Some Kind of Heaven’s release, with the sort-of title track “Heaven” zooming in on the album’s lyrical theme of luck while zooming out musically to present a broader shoegaze sound. “A friend of mine once told me that four leaf clovers are pretty easy to find,” vocalist Mischa Dempsey notes. “All you have to do is keep your eyes peeled—apparently they grow in patches because they all come from a mutated set of roots. While I was recovering from top surgery I took daily walks around Parc Jeanne Mance with my eyes glued to the ground. I would crouch on the side of the path and look through patches of clovers, but never managed to find a single one. This song is about the idea of perceiving yourself as having ‘bad luck,’ and how ultimately it can limit you from really understanding yourself.”

The track comes with a video featuring the band in proper angelic form banging the song out in a parking lot and indulging in some heavenly baked goods. Check it out below, and pre-order Some Kind of Heaven here.
