We’ve heard this story before: a major music festival books Chappell Roan for an afternoon set without anticipating a massive sea of fans in pink packing the festival grounds early for her performance, surpassing the crowds and excitement of even the fest’s headliners. As was the case with Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza over the last couple of months, Roan conquered San Francisco’s Outside Lands this past weekend, with many fans lining up before dawn to get a spot in front of the barricades for her show.
But beyond the Pink Pony Club mania, there were plenty of other stand-out performers, including a stunning set from 76-year-old icon Grace Jones, British rockers The Last Dinner Party (who are also creating their own frenzy on the fest circuit), shoegaze greats Slowdive, Australian punks Amyl and the Sniffers, and rapper Kevin Abstract, among others.
FLOOD photographer Wilson Lee was there throughout the three-day fest, trekking across the sprawling Golden Gate Park grounds to capture highlights of all of the aforementioned artists, as well as Sabrina Carpenter, Victoria Monét, ScHoolboy Q, Daniel Caesar, Sturgill Simpson (a.k.a. Johnny Blue Skies), and more.
