After making a splash in the indie scene nine years ago with the release of their self-titled debut EP and its immediate follow-up full-length, Beau was put on the backburner for nearly a decade as bandmates and life-long friends Heather Goldin and Emma Jenney let life get in the way of the project—as can so easily happen in your twenties. Yet our loss is also our gain, as the lack of output in the interim means the duo had plenty to process while penning their upcoming sophomore album Girl Cried Wolf, a record that pivots slightly from the indie-folk craze of a decade ago into a rawer rock-and-roll feel inspired by the ’00s post-punk revival movement as well as the more timeless sounds of dream pop.

The latest cut to arrive ahead of the new album’s release in October is titled “What Are You Doing to Me,” a title that sums up the conflicting emotions of following unhealthy instincts. “‘WYDTM’ is a song about desiring the unnecessary and longing for something that’ll ultimately tear you apart,” the band confirms of the single, which boasts a live-recorded feel that Beau aimed to capture in its accompanying video. “This song was recorded live in one take with our band, and we wanted the music video to reflect that same energy and be super fun—just us playing and dancing to the song.”

It’s earworm-y enough to fit on a playlist with anything from The Strokes’ first two records, though the chorus’ sense of longing sets it firmly apart from that scene’s apathetic lyricism. Check out the video below, and pre-save the album here before it lands October 11 via Immortal Records.
