Canadian songwriter Tia Wood broke out earlier this year with a succession of pop singles including “Losing Game,” “Dirt Roads,” and “Catch & Release,” which have all been leading up to today’s release of her debut EP Pretty Red Bird. Raised on a steady diet of Amy Winehouse, Etta James, and other vocalists both storied and distinct, all of these influences came through on the singles that make up the bulk of the new release. “This project celebrates who I am as a young, proudly Indigenous woman, making music with meaning and a purpose,” Wood shares today upon the EP’s release. “I’m so, so proud of what I’ve accomplished here, and I can’t wait to share it with the world.”
The EP closes with one final soaring vocal performance in the form of “Sky High,” a song aptly titled for the lofty ambitions housed within its lyrics. “All my colors turn to gold, look at me the centerfold / Being my own fantasy, Lookin’ at you lookin’ up at me,” Wood cooly boasts between contented sighs on the track’s chorus with an intonation that brings SZA to mind.
