Over the summer, NYC-based songwriter Heaven Schmitt has been teasing their debut release as Grumpy through their new label home of Bayonet Records with a string of singles that tap into the beamed-to-Earth pop aesthetic initially spearheaded by groups like 100 gecs or The Garden. Yet while the nu-pop lead singles from their upcoming EP already felt subdued in their gecciness, the third track to be revealed from Wolfed surprisingly takes the form of a minimal waltz. Removing the hip-hop beat heard on “Protein” entirely, “Flower” leaves plenty of space for Schmitt to meditate on the fallibility of relationships despite the lasting impact of the love fostered within them.
“Relationships aren’t forever, but love can be,” Schmitt explains. “‘Flower’ is about how, for me, at this stage of my life, love isn’t about building a permanent commitment to someone, it’s about nurturing a bond so that it may last a lifetime. In ‘Flower,’ I accept the end of a relationship with a peacefulness and gratitude that it happened at all. When I love someone, I know that love is bound to change shape, rather than dissolve, post-romance.”
While Schmitt sounds at peace both on the recording and in their level-headed examination of a bygone relationship, the track’s Meg Ha-directed music video sees them fighting a ferocious beach-side wind for possession of an umbrella. Fortunately, the loving presence of May Rio keeps them grounded. Check it out below, and pre-order Wolfed ahead of its October 25 release here.
