Somewhere in LA exists a tear in the time-space continuum resulting in a new wave of rock musicians funneled into the present from sunshine-pop’s heyday in the ’70s. Normally I’d suggest we should look into this, but it’s been a treat seeing artists like Billy Tibbals crop up since the global takeover of The Lemon Twigs beginning nearly a decade ago, with Tibbals’ glammier take on vintage rock and roll introduced on 2023’s Stay Teenage getting a slight tune-up over the summer with its follow-up, Nightlife Stories.
A standout among its brief tracklist, “The World Revolves” feels particularly apt for an upbeat party montage in a ’70s TV show. “It’s a party anthem!” Tibbals exclaims of the track, before summing up the escapist appeal of his music more broadly. “I don’t think it’s a complete bad idea to just forget about everything once in a while and have a wonderful time.” While the track is visceral enough that you could essentially already visualize that party, today we’re getting a music video for “The World Revolves” which may help ease the imaginative strain. Directed by Ambar Navarro—whose vintage-store aesthetic has recently serviced the likes of Weyes Blood, Automatic, and, yes, The Lemon Twigs—the clip takes influences from the 1980s BBC sitcom The Young Ones as well as the visual world built by The Rolling Stones in their music videos.
As Tibbals heads to Spain for a brief tour (including the sold-out Funtastic Drácula Carnival over Halloween weekend), you can check out the video below.
