After introducing their self-coined “Caribbean jazzgaze” sound on XVI, their 2021 debut album for Thurston Moore’s Daydream Library label, Seafoam Walls are returning on Friday to build upon that concept with their second album and first for local Florida indie Dion Dia Records. But before Standing Too Close to the Elephant in the Room is unleashed on October 18, the art-rock quartet is sharing one last intriguing cut from the LP in the form of the meditative “Rapids”—a slow-boiling cut pairing echoing baroque-pop vocals over minimal electronic percussion and a swirl of ambient-pop instrumentation.
As for the lyrics, vocalist Jayan Bertrand notes that the track wrestles with the struggle to keep up with the ever-changing world around us. “‘Rapids’ is short for ‘white water rapids’—a fast-moving body of water that cares or waits for no living being,” Bertrand explains. “I see time in a similar way. Society will progress without you if you get stuck in your ways. It helps to be as fluid as the times allow.”
The track arrives with a music video setting the recording to grainy yet soothing scenes of what appears to be Miami’s natural wildlife along with some footage set in malls and on the road. Check out the cryptic imagery below.
