dodie has offered up a rendition of the classic tune “Old Devil Moon,” which was interpreted by Chet Baker among many other artists, including Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, and Sonny Rollins. On dodie‘s version, the musician cooks up a funky percussive groove accented by a rumbling bass line and jazz-inflected piano chords. Her voice is smoky and intoxicating, a lounge act conjured through computer speakers (or, if you share a house with another person like me, headphones).
“How lucky am I to get to live in the world of Chet’s soft playful croons for this gorgeous collection?” dodie shared. “So fun to marry our styles and lean into a jazzier side. Chet Baker was my #1 artist in 2023 (apparently a top 5 percent fan) so I was just thrilled to be asked to pick a favorite (although that part was difficult) and spend time with his gorgeous version of ‘Old Devil Moon’ and dream up how we could team up.”
Chet Baker Re:imagined—which also features Matt Maltese, Matilda Mann, Joel Culpepper, Ife Ogunjobi, Hohnen Ford, Eloise, Poppy Daniels, Puma Blue, Benny Sings, Stacey Ryan, Delaney Bailey, mxmtoon, Sara Kang, and grentperez—is out on April 11, and can be pre-ordered here.
