It’s not everyday that a musical collaboration is born out of two artists spending a series of nights clubbing together, bonding over their mutual taste in dance music—yet there isn’t a whole lot about musician/comedian/actor/improvisatory genius Reggie Watts that’s conventional. His latest work finds him teaming up with Berlin-by-way-of-Austin collective CAPYAC, with whom he shares an affinity for deep house and other electronic sounds, not to mention the venues that play them to sweaty rooms full of ravers well into the night.
On February 28, this partnership will become official with the release of their debut EP together, titled Songs From Celestial City. Ahead of that date, we’re getting a first taste of the collection with the buzzing “Dreamwalking,” a single balancing a tight electronic beat, airy atmospheric synths, and Watts’ soulful falsetto. “‘Dreamwalking,’ in particular, was the first moment where we thought, ‘OK, this could actually be something,” the band recalls. “We recorded the demos in two sessions with Reggie in LA, and then we took the tracks home and edited them into the finished tracks. These songs were informed by the improvisational nature of the initial writing sessions, and by our mutual love of house music. Going clubbing with Reggie a few times definitely helped us get all in the same headspace.”
