Working within the realms of post-punk and noise rock for over a decade now, Seattle’s Haunted Horses have improved with every new release when it comes to honing that sonic palette into something foreboding, if not downright creepy. Following 2022’s doomily industrial The Worst Has Finally Happened, January will mark the release of their fourth LP, Dweller, a concept album of sorts which sees its titular figure attempting to claw out of the visceral sense of darkness the band harnesses in their sound.

Landing dead in the middle of that LP, the project’s latest single “Temple of Bone” is an eerily droning interlude doing more with the absence of sound than much of the record does with its heaviest riffs. Little changes sonically over the course of four repetitious yet slowly intensifying minutes as vocalist Colin Dawson spins a tail of the protagonist’s darkest moment. “Written in the depths of winter, we set out to capture something bleak,” he explains. “Here, the Dweller is in a space in between, which requires letting go. Here, the Dweller must find their own light to guide the way forward.”
