When it comes to their new track “Make My World,” Dorio are less interested in expressing specific sonic reference points than they are their method of discovering them. The duo of Chad Doriocourt and Rachel Rascoe crafted the song after being inspired by virtual crate digs (well, jewel-case digs) for CD titles from the ’90s and ’00s that felt as out-of-fashion as they were out-of-press. Pooled together, these influences sourced from Italian and Japanese vendors congealed as an upbeat form of bubblegum-pop and hip-hop percussion that recalls the recent neo-psych output of Stones Throw Records. “Listening to different forms of pop music through the CDs, we wanted to reimagine the Dorio world with these new things, especially the classical guitar,” Doriocourt shares, also citing flutes and horns as common denominators in these CDs.
Paired with the breezy instrumentation are equally light lyrics, which are largely sung in unison by Doriocourt and Rascoe. “This song hangs onto little things, like walking and talking together, and how those can either be a delight or a drag,” Roscoe notes. “I remember when Chad showed me the acoustic guitar line the song is built around and I really liked that. We had been listening to Pizzicato Five CDs in his car a lot. I imagine us walking around a spinning globe with giant cartoon shoes on during this one.”
