Following Deafheaven’s softened 2021 LP Infinite Granite, guitarist Shiv Mehra’s side project with Chris Natividad (of post-punk outfit Marbled Eye, as well as his like-minded solo outlet Public Interest) makes a little more sense. Heaven’s Club officially arrived on the scene in 2019 after nearly a decade of output with a more expansive lineup under the shoegaze-ier moniker Creepers, with the melancholic dream-pop and introspective psychedelia of their debut, Here There and Nowhere, starkly contrasting with the black-metal chaos that defined Ordinary Corrupt Human Love the year prior.
After releasing another EP through the very-metal label Profound Lore in 2021, the band returns this week with their Free World EP, a three-track collection for their new label home of Born Losers which exhibits their patient songwriting formula. Opener “Destroyer” is a hazy introduction to their robust post-new-wave sound, while the closing title track shrinks things down to nearly fit the slowcore mold. In between, the instrumental “d(us)t” provides four minutes of atmosphere to cleanse the palate between cuts. Check it all out a day early below, and pre-order the Free World cassette here.
