Texas-raised, LA-based artist Lindsey Rose Black has shared a new single entitled “The Butcher,” which features drums from Local Natives’ Matthew Frazier. The song, which follows “Wrong Side” from February, is a slow-burning waltz built around a buzzing synth melody, clicking percussion, and Black’s enchanting voice. She sings: “My love, the butcher, what’s the lesson? / Twist the knife, call it caressing / How could I stay?”
“‘The Butcher’ explores the illusion of a love that’s built on a foundation of you becoming someone else,” Black shares. “It’s a loose reflection on various exes who pushed me to change little things about myself while we were together—my hair color, the way I dressed, who I was. Admittedly, I was so blinded by the rose-colored obsession of wanting to be their fantasy that I didn’t have the perspective until years later to realize I was quite literally being cut away at throughout those relationships.”
The track arrives with a video, which Black describes as “a southern, BBQ-laced bisexual fever dream! Exes across the gender spectrum inspired the visual world, and I intentionally wanted to lean into the ambiguity of who our steak-eating gal is lusting after even as it’s not reciprocated.” Check out the video for “The Butcher“ below.
