Sister. is the second of two important collaborations forged between NYC-based artists Ceci Sturman and Hannah Pruzinsky (a.k.a. h. pruz) in 2023: Their debut album Abundance landed just a few months after the duo launched their local DIY music zine GUNK. While the paper is still going strong, last June’s “Colorado” single indicated that Sister. (which is rounded out by guitarist James Chrisman) is more than a one-off project. And today, another new single drops in the form of the sprawling yet muted meditation on intimate friendships, “Blood in the Vines.” Simmering nearly to a boil in several instances over the track’s six minutes, the gentle rocker mimics the delicacy of navigating connections with friends-turned-roommates, roommates-turned-friends, and any other scenario in which overlapping living spaces might jeopardize a meaningful relationship.
“‘Blood in the Vines’ is about a young and confused friendship, the story of two people in close quarters observing each other and learning how to parse through strife and desire and sameness and difference,” the band collectively shares of the single, which was co-produced and features additional instrumentation from Told Slant’s Felix Walworth, and which sounds much more pre-meditated than it evidently was. “Our entire band wrote ‘Blood in the Vines’ collaboratively; it stemmed from a prompt to write a song in 30 minutes and we finished it in one sitting.”
